Due to both its origin and location the Modern Chinese Art Foundation and the China Art Archives and Warehouse enjoy a privileged relationship.

Through its presence in China and its well-established position in the Beijing art scene, the China Art Archives and Warehouse (CAAW) conducts a leading role in monitoring and evaluating modern Chinese art.


Thanks to long-standing cooperation with cultural workers and art institutions in China, the CAAW has forged durable links with artists based both in China and overseas.

The CAAW has also earned the support of well-known personalities within local and international art circles by presenting many of the leading exhibitions of Chinese contemporary art both in China and abroad.

The Beijing-based CAAW features a large exhibition space where it hosts six annual shows devoted to contemporary Chinese art.


In addition, it features a documentation centre with an extensive archive and library related to modern and contemporary Chinese art. Materials in the archive date to the late 1980s and were collected by scholar Hans Van Dijk. This documentation centre is open to the public and research may be done in the offices of the CAAW;


All CAAW events are realized in close cooperation with the artists and aim to present the stylistic statements of the artist involved while at the same time givinq them a platform to complete their work.


The CAAW charter also allows for the presentation of interesting work by international artists, which helps facilitate deeper understanding of art within a larger context. These selected shows also help assist local artists find their place in the larger theoretical environment.
