| Existence in Translation is the monograph covering the work of Chinese performance artist Cang Xin. Cang Xin began his career as a performance artist when he first lived in the East Village, in Beijing, with fellow artists, Ma Liuming, Zhang Huan and Zhu Ming in the early 90's. In this period he participated in the performance 'To Add One Meter to an Unknown Mountain', which has since become on the most memorable images in Chinese contemporary art. This monograph also covers series of work he has developed since this time. This includes his 'Trampling Faces' series, in which the artist created masks of his own face which were placed on the ground and trampled by the audience, his 'Communication' series, in which the artist uses the action of licking to communicate with objects, people and environment and his 'Identity Exchange' series in which the artist switches identities with different people of social standings and occupations in China by taking their clothing and leaving the individuals in their underwear. Existence in Translation features detailed images of the artists' performances and writings about his works by Chinese curators and critics such as Zhu Qi, Huang Du and Feng Boyi. |
